Tenant Claims Landlord Offered to Waive $1,500 Rent for Sexual Favors

Conflict In An Apartment

A Chicago tenant has accused her landlord of proposing sexual favors in exchange for waiving a $1,500 rent payment, an allegation that has sparked widespread criticism online.

The tenant shared the claim in a viral social media post, saying the dispute began after she paid rent through Cash App. According to her account, the landlord said funds had not yet appeared in their account due to processing delays.

The landlord allegedly suggested that future payments be made earlier — or, inappropriately, that the tenant provide sexual favors instead.

The tenant rejected the proposal and publicized the incident, drawing condemnation of the landlord’s alleged behavior. The landlord has not issued a response, and no legal action has yet been confirmed.

Cash App typically processes payments within one to three business days, though delays can occur depending on bank policies. The case has fueled debate about the reliability of digital payment apps for rent, with some users stressing the need to plan for delays, while others called the landlord’s alleged remarks exploitative and unethical.

The incident also highlights ongoing tensions in Chicago’s rental market, where rising rents and disputes between tenants and landlords remain common. Under the Chicago Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance, tenants are protected against harassment and may pursue damages in cases of improper conduct.

Tenant advocacy groups have urged city officials to investigate the case and strengthen guidelines for digital rent payments. Authorities have not commented on the matter.
