Sony Confirms New AAA Studio in Los Angeles, Working on PS5 IP

Sony has confirmed the opening of a new AAA PlayStation studio in Los Angeles, California. This newly-established studio is working on a high-profile original AAA IP for the PlayStation 5, according to a recent job listing.

This marks the 20th studio under Sony’s first-party umbrella. PlayStation’s first-party studios are well-known for creating some of the most acclaimed games in the industry, which has generated significant anticipation for this new project.

While the studio’s name and specific game are still under wraps, there is speculation about who might be behind this new team.

One possibility is that the studio could be working on a spin-off project from Bungie’s team, which was involved in the Gummybears incubation project.

This initiative was announced during the Bungie layoffs in July 2024, where many staff members were moved to Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Another strong candidate is a team led by Jason Blundell, a former Call of Duty: Black Ops developer. Blundell had co-founded Deviation Games, which was working on a new AAA IP for PlayStation before the studio shut down in March 2024.

Many former Deviation Games employees have since joined PlayStation, possibly forming the foundation of this new studio. Fans speculate that Blundell’s team could be continuing or rebooting Deviation Games’ previous project.

While it’s unclear when Sony will officially reveal more about this new studio, the news has fans excited about the future of PlayStation’s first-party lineup.
