Sony has revealed its new A1 II camera at the Creative Space event in New York. The flagship mirrorless camera is priced at $6,499 and offers several improvements over the original A1.
The A1 II retains the 50.1-megapixel full-frame stacked sensor from its predecessor. It can shoot RAW photos at 30 frames per second and record 8K video at 30p or 4K video at 120p.
The new model adopts a design similar to the Sony A9 III, with a taller grip and better ergonomics. It also includes an in-body stabilizer for 8.5 stops of correction, a speed boost button, and a pre-capture feature.
Sony has added an AI processor for enhanced autofocus and a vari-angle tilting screen, borrowed from the A7R V. These features aim to improve usability and performance.
A new FE 28-70mm f/2 GM lens will launch alongside the camera in December. This lens offers a faster maximum aperture than the popular 24-70mm f/2.8 but sacrifices some wide-angle range.
Weighing 918g, the lens is lighter than Canonโs similar model and costs $2,899, which is slightly cheaper than Canonโs $3,099 price tag.
Despite the upgrades, the A1 II does not include a global shutter, a feature still found only in the A9 III. This suggests Sony chose resolution over dynamic range and ISO performance.
The original A1 launched in 2021 as Sonyโs most versatile camera. The A1 II continues this legacy but faces tougher competition from rivals like Canon R1 and Nikon Z9.
The A1 II and its companion lens will be available for purchase in December. Professionals can expect modest but meaningful upgrades in speed and usability.
