The post-Christmas box office is buzzing with fierce competition as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King continue to battle for the top spot.
On Friday, Sonic led with $12.6 million, narrowly beating Mufasaโs $12.1 million. However, Mufasa is expected to claim victory over the five-day period with an estimated $61.7 million, while Sonic will take in $59.4 million.
This family movie showdown is part of a larger surge in box office numbers, with overall earnings for the weekend expected to hit $161 million, a 43% increase from last year.
Among the strong performers are Wicked and Moana 2, both continuing to draw large audiences. In a significant development, Focus Features and Searchlight Pictures are having a major resurgence.
Focus Featuresโ Nosferatu, a gothic vampire film by Robert Eggers, opened to $20.15 million over the weekend, surpassing previous records for the label. With a 5-day total of $39.3 million, it marks Focus Features’ best post-pandemic opening.
Meanwhile, Searchlightโs A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timothรฉe Chalamet, also performed well, earning $11.8 million over three days. This marks the best opening for Searchlight since the 2019 Disney merger.
These successes for Focus and Searchlight show that audiences are still excited about mid-sized films, especially those with strong directorial visions.
The popularity of Nosferatu, a horror film, and A Complete Unknown, a biographical drama, highlight the demand for unique, high-quality cinema in the current market.
