A new report has claimed that decades of Area 51 alien conspiracies were part of a major cover-up by the US government. According to newly released findings from a 2024 US Department of Defense review, the UFO rumours were allegedly used to distract the public from secret weapons testing programs during the Cold War.
The report suggests that the Pentagon deliberately spread fake UFO stories, including handing out fabricated photos of alien spacecraft to locals. By the 1980s, even Air Force officials were said to have given out UFO pictures in local bars.
Area 51, located in Nevada’s Groom Lake, has long been a source of alien conspiracy theories. Though officially acknowledged in 2013, it remains heavily restricted and surrounded by decades of speculation about extraterrestrial life and advanced technology.
One of the most famous claims came in 1989, when Robert Lazar alleged that he worked on recovered alien spacecraft at a hidden facility called S-4 near Area 51. However, the new report says this was part of an elaborate scheme to hide real military operations, like the development of spy planes such as the U-2 and A-12.
The report further claims that Air Force commanders were even pranked with briefings about a fake alien program, known as ‘Yankee Blue’, as a form of hazing.
The findings come from the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), a Pentagon team that investigates claims of secret government programs related to UFOs and alien technology.
Despite years of UFO sightings and wild theories, the official story is that Area 51 was only used for top-secret aircraft testing, not alien research.
For now, the legend of Area 51 continues, fueled by mystery, secrecy—and now, claims of a government-orchestrated conspiracy to cover up military secrets.
