Scarlett Johansson Surpasses Marvel Co-Stars to Become Highest-Grossing Actor

Scarlett Johansson has set a new box office record, becoming the highest-grossing lead actor worldwide before inflation adjustment. This achievement comes following the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth, where Johansson takes the lead role, surpassing fellow Marvel stars Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr.

In Jurassic World: Rebirth, Johansson stars as ex-military operative Zora Bennett, leading a mission to one of the last remaining islands with living dinosaurs after the events of the Jurassic World trilogy. The film earned $318 million globally in its first six days, making it the second highest-grossing 2025 release after China’s animated film Ne Zha 2.

Data from The Numbers reveals Johansson’s total career box office gross now stands at $14.8 billion for films where she played a lead or lead ensemble role. More than $8.7 billion of this comes from her appearances in the Avengers films and Captain America: Civil War, where she portrayed Natasha Romanov, also known as Black Widow.

Her lead roles also include Iron Man 2 and voice roles in the animated Sing films, which contribute to her impressive total.

Among the top five highest-grossing lead actors listed by The Numbers, only Tom Hanks has not appeared in a Marvel film. The others are Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Chris Pratt. Jackson previously held the record with $14.6 billion, helped by his roles in Marvel movies and the Incredibles animated films.

Robert Downey Jr., known as the founding star of the MCU, has grossed $14.2 billion in lead roles, with $11.8 billion from nine Marvel movies. His supporting role in Oppenheimer is not included in this total.

Downey Jr. could reclaim the top spot in December 2026 with the release of Avengers: Doomsday, depending on how roles are counted and whether upcoming MCU films bring back Black Widow, despite Johansson stating her time with Marvel has ended.
