Sakamoto Days: The John Wick-Inspired Anime You Need to Watch Now.

John Wick changed the action genre when it debuted in 2010, inspiring countless movies and stories. Now, Netflix’s latest anime, Sakamoto Days, brings a fresh twist to the hitman formula. Based on Yuto Suzuki’s 2020 manga, the anime follows Taro Sakamoto, a former assassin who gives up his violent life for love. But when his past catches up, he must fight to protect his family—without breaking his promise to stop killing.

If you love John Wick, Sakamoto Days is a must-watch. The first two episodes are streaming now on Netflix and have already climbed into the platform’s Top 10, ranking third globally.

A John Wick Homage With a Twist
While Sakamoto Days shares key themes with John Wick—a retired hitman forced back into action—the anime takes a lighter approach. Taro Sakamoto, now running a convenience store, is determined to leave his violent life behind. Unlike John Wick’s relentless revenge spree, Taro juggles everyday challenges with comedic moments while defending his family.

The anime still delivers intense action sequences, including a stunning opening scene showing Taro’s younger days as a sleek, deadly assassin wielding a gun and katana. This scene feels like it could have been pulled straight from the John Wick films, especially the third movie, where Wick famously uses both weapons.

Behind the Scenes: John Wick’s Influence
Yuto Suzuki, the creator of Sakamoto Days, has openly expressed his admiration for John Wick. According to Sousuke Ishikawa, the manga’s editor, Suzuki is inspired by foreign action films, including The Equalizer and John Wick. “He’s great at creating action scenes,” Ishikawa said.

The show even includes subtle nods to John Wick. In one scene, Taro imagines killing his ally Shin Asakura with various objects—including a pencil. This is a clear homage to Wick’s iconic pencil scene, referenced in the first movie.

What’s Next for Sakamoto Days?
The anime’s first two episodes have captured fans’ attention with its unique blend of action, humor, and heartfelt moments. New episodes drop weekly on Saturdays, giving fans plenty of time to catch up and dive into the thrilling world of Taro Sakamoto.

Whether you’re a die-hard John Wick fan or just love action-packed anime, Sakamoto Days offers a fresh, entertaining take on the hitman genre.
