Lil Nas X will spend the weekend in jail after being arrested in Los Angeles on Thursday morning, following an unusual incident in which he was seen walking the streets in his underwear and cowboy boots.

The 25-year-old singer, best known for his hit Montero (Call Me By Your Name), was detained after police responded to reports of erratic behaviour. According to eyewitnesses, he placed a traffic cone on his head and, at one point, allegedly charged at an officer.

Authorities confirmed he was arrested on suspicion of battery on a police officer, a misdemeanor offence. He was first taken to hospital for evaluation before being booked at Van Nuys jail.

Because of the nature of the charge, Lil Nas X must appear before a judge to have his bail set. That hearing is not scheduled until Monday, meaning he will remain in custody over the weekend.

Speculation has circulated online that the incident may have been drug-related, though this has not been confirmed. Supporters expressed shock at the news and voiced concern for the artist’s wellbeing.

The arrest comes as Lil Nas X prepares to release his second studio album, DREAMBOY. Earlier this year, he revealed he had experienced temporary facial paralysis, which left him unable to smile or laugh normally for a period. He has since made a full recovery.

Fans are now hoping he receives the support he needs to overcome this latest setback.
