Putin Proposes China as Guarantor for Ukraine Peace Deal

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked China to act as a guarantor for a possible peace agreement aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

The proposal was made during a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, Axios reported.

Putin suggested that Ukraine withdraw its forces from Donetsk and Luhansk in exchange for Russia stopping advances in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

The plan would allow Russia to maintain control over occupied territories. Putin prefers China’s involvement instead of NATO’s, seeking to limit Western military influence.

President Trump intends to discuss the proposal with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on August 22.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, said on August 18 that China supports peace and dialogue but did not confirm whether it would act as a guarantor.

Zelensky opposes giving up Ukrainian territory, and European leaders question China’s neutrality because of its close ties with Russia.

Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some seeing the move as a step toward diplomacy, while others doubt China can act impartially.
