Paramore’s Hayley Williams Calls Out Christian Rock Scene After Michael Tait Abuse Reports

Paramore’s Hayley Williams has spoken out strongly against the Christian music industry after serious allegations surfaced against Michael Tait, the lead singer of Christian rock band Newsboys and former member of DC Talk.

Last week, an investigation by the Roys Report accused Tait of grooming, sexual assault, and heavy drug use. Tait admitted in a statement that he abused cocaine, drank too much alcohol, and made unwanted sexual advances toward men. He called his actions sinful and said he was seeking repentance, hinting that he saw both his abusive behavior and same-sex attractions as wrong.

A new report from The Guardian has now described Tait’s misconduct as “the biggest open secret in Christian music.” Two of Tait’s alleged victims believe he drugged them, and four more men accused him of unwanted touching and sexual advances. One victim said, “This man destroyed my life.”

Hayley Williams, who grew up in Christian music circles, responded on Instagram. She criticized the Christian music industry for protecting Tait and ignoring the deeper issue of self-hatred around sexuality. She argued that the industry made money for years while covering up abuse.

“I hope the CCM industry crumbles,” Williams wrote. She added that many people around her likely knew about Tait’s behavior but chose to stay silent. She called this cover-up the real sin.

Williams’ post quickly went viral, sparking major debate across social media about abuse and hypocrisy in Christian music.
