OpenAI Set to Launch GPT-5 in August, Report Says

OpenAI is preparing to launch its next-generation artificial intelligence model, GPT-5, as early as August, according to a report by The Verge published Thursday.

The new model is expected to mark a significant evolution in OpenAI’s offerings by combining multiple models and capabilities into a single system. Instead of relying on a standalone language model, GPT-5 will integrate the company’s o3 model and other technologies, aiming to provide users with more versatile and capable AI tools.

OpenAI has not yet confirmed the launch date, and a spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

The Microsoft-backed startup first hinted at this shift in February, with CEO Sam Altman outlining plans to simplify and unify the company’s model architecture. By merging the GPT-series and o-series, OpenAI aims to build an AI system capable of using all available tools to perform a wide range of tasks — from generating text to interacting with third-party services.

While the release is tentatively expected in early August, sources familiar with OpenAI’s strategy cautioned that launch timelines often change. Delays could stem from technical challenges, server capacity issues, or strategic adjustments in response to rival product announcements.

GPT-5’s launch comes as the competition in generative AI continues to intensify, with companies like Google, Anthropic, and Meta also rapidly advancing their own models.
