OpenAI Eases Restrictions, Lets ChatGPT Users Generate Adult Content

OpenAI has announced that it will soon allow adult content on its ChatGPT platform, marking a significant change in the company’s content policy. The decision follows months of discussion about relaxing restrictions on sexual content for adult users.

The updated policy, outlined in OpenAI’s Model Spec, states that only content involving minors remains strictly prohibited. The company said it aims to allow developers and users to generate age-appropriate erotica and other mature material while continuing to block harmful uses, including sexual deepfakes and revenge pornography.

The move was confirmed at OpenAI’s DevDay 2025 event, where the company also revealed plans to introduce a long-awaited age verification system to ensure compliance with the new rules. Previously, users noted that while some restrictions had been eased, the chatbot still avoided explicit content through automated filtering.

OpenAI has faced growing pressure from regulators, researchers, and media outlets over ChatGPT’s potential risks, including excessive agreeableness that could expose vulnerable users to harm. The company implemented a “hotfix” earlier this year to address unintended harmful outputs.

The new adult content allowance will be available through ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, provided usage policies are followed. OpenAI emphasised that the changes are intended for responsible, age-verified users.
