Omar Hamad’s Wedding Picture Divides Opinion Amid Gaza Turmoil

Omar Hamad’s Wedding Picture Smoking

Palestinian writer Omar Hamad has stirred both criticism and support after sharing his wedding photo on social media on October 7, 2025, amid the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

The photo shows Hamad in a suit, smoking a cigarette, and wearing a watch — a brief moment of happiness that stood out against the region’s harsh realities. While some praised the image as a symbol of hope and resilience, others called it inappropriate, arguing that such displays of comfort were insensitive during a time of widespread hardship.

Critics on X focused on the cigarette and watch, interpreting them as symbols of luxury. In response, Hamad defended his post, saying that celebrating love and joy in Gaza was an act of resistance. “This joy is our defiance,” he wrote, insisting that Gazans have the right to moments of normalcy despite suffering.

Many users, however, came to Hamad’s defense, praising the photo as a reminder of Palestinian perseverance. One supporter wrote, “Love and life persist even in the darkest times. This is Gaza’s strength.” The post quickly went viral, gaining thousands of likes and shares.

The online debate comes as Israel and Hamas continue negotiations toward a possible ceasefire, following months of violence and displacement. Hamad’s wedding photo has since become a powerful symbol of Gaza’s struggle — balancing sorrow and celebration, despair and defiance.
