Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5090 Founders Edition graphics card has drawn criticism after a repair technician called its design “one of the worst” he has ever seen. A teardown by Northridge Fix revealed a damaged internal connector that cannot be replaced or sourced, making the card effectively unrepairable.
The problem emerged after a customer installed a third-party water block. While a second RTX 5090 card from the same setup was repaired successfully, the Founders Edition model failed to output video. The fault was traced to a fragile board-to-board FPC connector within the card’s modular two-part construction.
Repair expert Alex said that every additional joint in a device increases the risk of failure. He warned that the connector, which links the GPU to the PCIe interface, is not available for purchase. This leaves owners with no practical way to fix the card if it breaks.
Alex strongly advised against attempting repairs. “If it’s not broken, do not fix it,” he said. “I would stay as far away from the Founders Edition 5090 as I possibly can.”
The report raises concerns for consumers investing in Nvidia’s high-end GPUs, especially those considering custom cooling modifications.
