NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti GPUs have been reported by many users to suffer from sudden black or blank screens, sometimes even preventing the system from reaching the BIOS. In response, NVIDIA has released a new GPU UEFI Firmware Update Tool v2.0 aimed at fixing these reboot-related display failures.
The black screen problem affects all RTX 50 series GPUs, but the RTX 5060 line is currently the most affected. Reports have emerged on forums and social media about system crashes and freezes where the screen goes completely black — and in some cases, users cannot boot their systems normally at all. The issue seems complex and not directly tied to GPU workload or driver versions.
NVIDIA recommends users apply the firmware update only if the blank screen occurs specifically after rebooting. The update is not a guaranteed fix for all affected GPUs, especially for systems that fail to boot even once after installation. Some users have only been able to boot into safe mode after installing their RTX 5060 Ti cards.
To help alleviate the issue, NVIDIA’s official guidance includes:
- Powering down the system completely before booting again
- Ensuring the latest motherboard SBIOS is installed
- Verifying the system is set to UEFI boot mode, not Legacy/CSM
- Booting with an alternate graphics source, like integrated GPU or a secondary card
- Waiting for the OS to fully load with the GPU driver installed
If a user’s motherboard doesn’t support UEFI boot mode, NVIDIA advises contacting the GPU manufacturer’s customer service to request a Legacy VBIOS update.
This firmware update signals NVIDIA’s commitment to resolving these frustrating stability issues on the RTX 5060 series, but affected users may still face challenges and should carefully follow NVIDIA’s troubleshooting steps.
