Nuggets Face Front Office Shakeup as Jokic Holds Off on New Contract

Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic has decided to postpone contract extension discussions until 2026. The 30-year-old center, a three-time NBA MVP, is eligible this summer for a three-year, $212 million extension but is choosing to wait for a potentially more lucrative deal.

By delaying negotiations, Jokic could secure approximately $80 million more with a four-year extension starting in 2026. This financial incentive aligns with his strong career position—Jokic recently posted career-high averages in points (29.6), assists (10.2), and steals (1.8) per game—and his contract still includes two guaranteed years plus a player option for the 2027-28 season.

The Nuggets’ front office anticipated Jokic’s decision, viewing it as a strategic business move rather than dissatisfaction following the team’s recent Western Conference semifinals exit or coaching changes.

Denver is currently undergoing major front office restructuring after firing General Manager Calvin Booth and not renewing Assistant GM Tommy Balcetis’ contract. Interim GM Ben Tenzer now leads basketball operations amid challenges including salary cap constraints and a high luxury tax bill.

Jokic’s delay allows both the player and the Nuggets time to consider the best long-term arrangement. Team chairman Josh Kroenke has emphasized working with Jokic to find a contract that fits his career goals and personal needs.
