A recent leak concerning Nintendo Switch 2 cartridges has revealed some concerning news for fans of physical media. Data obtained from a breach of Arc System Works files suggests that Switch 2 games may only be released in a 64 GB cartridge size, making it an expensive option for smaller publishers. This has led to a shift in preference toward Game-Key Cards and digital downloads as more affordable alternatives.

The leak, which involved files from the developer behind Guilty Gear and Dragon Ball FighterZ, suggests that publishers will have limited choices for Switch 2 game distribution: digital downloads (DL), 64 GB cartridges, and Game-Key Cards (codenamed POTION). The 64 GB cartridge is expected to cost around $16, a significant increase compared to the lower-cost options available for the original Switch.

The Game-Key Card format is already drawing some criticism from fans. These cards contain very little data and require an internet connection to download the full game, a model that is often seen as more convenient but less satisfying for collectors and those who prefer physical media.

While first-party titles like Mario Kart World are still expected to use conventional cartridges, other publishers seem to be embracing the Game-Key Card format, which allows them to save on manufacturing costs.

The Switch 2’s shift toward larger, pricier cartridges is likely an effort to streamline production, but the decision is causing some concern within the gaming community. Smaller indie developers, who could previously choose between a range of cartridge sizes, now face increased costs, making digital releases a more attractive (and budget-friendly) option. Despite some pushback from fans, Nintendo seems to be betting on digital distribution as the future of its gaming ecosystem.

As the Switch 2 continues to evolve, the question remains: will physical media remain relevant in a world increasingly dominated by digital downloads and Game-Key Cards? Only time will tell, but this leak certainly provides a glimpse into the future of Nintendo’s next-generation console.
