YouTube is gearing up to launch a new, lower-cost ad-free subscription plan, aiming to attract users who primarily watch podcasts, tutorials, and other non-music content.
Dubbed “Premium Lite,” this service will roll out soon in the U.S., Australia, Germany, and Thailand, according to insiders.
A More Affordable Alternative to YouTube Premium
Currently, YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month in the U.S. and offers an ad-free experience across all videos, including music content.
The new Premium Lite plan, however, is expected to be more affordable, catering specifically to viewers who don’t need music streaming benefits.
A YouTube spokesperson confirmed the move, stating:
“As part of our commitment to provide our users with more choice and flexibility, we’ve been testing a new YouTube Premium offering with most videos ad-free in several of our markets.”
Impact on YouTubers and the Streaming Industry
This shift could affect how YouTubers earn revenue, as many content creators rely on ad-based income. With more users opting out of ads, YouTube may increase revenue-sharing from subscriptions, similar to models seen on streaming platforms like Spotify.
Speaking of Spotify, the Swedish company has also been expanding into video content. Last month, Spotify introduced an ad-free video option for paying subscribers, a move that could compete with YouTube’s latest plans.
By offering a cheaper ad-free tier, YouTube aims to retain users who might otherwise turn to Spotify or other platforms for an uninterrupted viewing experience. However, music lovers will still need to subscribe to the full YouTube Premium package to enjoy ad-free music videos.
The official pricing and launch date of Premium Lite remain undisclosed, but its broader rollout signals YouTube’s growing focus on subscription-based revenue models.
