A new report shows that Indian Americans have the highest income and education levels among all Asian groups in the United States.
Their median household income has reached over $150,000, which is around 40% more than what Chinese and Japanese American households earn.
The report also highlights that 77% of Indian Americans have at least a bachelor’s degree, putting them just behind Taiwanese Americans, who top the list at 83%.
In comparison, some communities like Bhutanese and Burmese Americans show much lower levels of higher education.
Asian Americans now make up 7.4% of the U.S. population, growing from just 4.2% in 2000. Among them, Chinese Americans are the largest group at 22%, followed by Indian Americans at 21% and Filipino Americans at 19%.
The report also notes a change in immigration trends. In 2000, 72% of Indian Americans were immigrants. By 2023, that number dropped, as more second-generation Indian Americans are now born in the U.S.
While most groups with high education levels also report higher incomes, this is not always the case. Mongolian Americans, for example, have a high education rate but the lowest household income among Asian groups.
This data shows the wide range of experiences within the Asian American community. Indian Americans, in particular, continue to stand out for their success in both education and income.
