Google’s latest app, the Android System Key Verifier, adds a new layer of security to your chats by using encryption keys and QR codes.
Launched with the recent Google Play System update, the app is designed to help developers securely store encryption keys, providing extra protection for user conversations.
The app works on devices running Android 10 or newer and ensures end-to-end encryption in messaging apps like Google Messages. I
t verifies user identities by exchanging QR codes when adding new contacts, allowing both parties to confirm they’re chatting with the right person.
If someone switches devices, the encryption keys won’t match, alerting users to potential identity verification or the use of a new device.
While no apps currently use the Key Verifier, it’s expected that Google will integrate it into Messages by 2025. This app is likely a step toward enhancing contact verification features in the future.
