Apple’s latest iOS 18.4 beta has revealed a new device category called “Home”, suggesting that the company may be working on a brand-new smart home product.
This category appears alongside existing ones like iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Reality (Vision Pro), making it clear that this is something different from HomePod, which is already classified under “Audio.”
According to recent leaks, Apple has been working on a device that combines the features of a HomePod and an iPad, designed to control smart home accessories using Siri and a touchscreen display.
Reports indicate that the device, codenamed J490, will be powered by the A18 chip to support Apple Intelligence features.
Unlike an iPad, the device is rumored to have a square display and a built-in camera for FaceTime and gesture controls.
Additionally, iOS 18.4 introduces a new “Food” section in Apple News+ with curated recipes. Apple has also developed CookingKit, an API that lets users search for recipes using Siri and Spotlight.
Given the deep system integration, this feature could be designed to work seamlessly with Apple’s upcoming smart home device.
While this device was originally rumored to launch in early 2025, reports now suggest it may arrive later this year.
