Netflix Plans AI Ads During Shows — Here’s Why Fans Are Annoyed

Netflix announced plans to show AI-generated ads to subscribers who use its cheaper ad-supported plan. These new ads are expected to start appearing in 2026 and will interrupt shows like Squid Game and Stranger Things.

Netflix’s President of Advertising, Amy Reinhard, said that viewers pay as much attention to ads as they do to the shows themselves. However, many viewers disagree and find ads on Netflix annoying.

The AI ads will blend into the shows by adding overlays or inserting ads during pauses. This means viewers may see AI-created content related to the show they are watching. Netflix hopes this will improve ad engagement, but some think it will just make interruptions more frustrating.

Some people worry about how Netflix will train these AI ads. The ads might use data from the shows and movies on Netflix, raising concerns about copyright and whether creators agree with this use.

Netflix currently has 94 million ad-supported subscribers. Many choose this plan to save money, not because they like watching ads. Critics say Netflix should focus more on improving content and features, like expanding its gaming options or creating longer seasons of popular shows, instead of pushing AI ads.

For many, AI ads interrupting favorite shows will be a reason to cancel their subscription and seek other streaming options.
