Netflix has renewed “Wednesday” for a third season, the streaming service announced ahead of the show’s second season premiere.

The supernatural comedy series, starring Jenna Ortega as the darkly comedic Wednesday Addams, holds the record as Netflix’s most popular English-language series of all time. The renewal comes as Season 2 prepares to debut in two parts on August 6 and September 3.

“Wednesday” follows the titular character after she is expelled from her previous school for dumping piranhas into the pool and transferred to Nevermore Academy, a private school for outcasts.

The series features Ortega alongside Gwendoline Christie as the shapeshifting principal, Emma Myers as Wednesday’s werewolf roommate Enid, and Riki Lindhome as the school therapist.

The extensive cast also includes Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Christina Ricci, Steve Buscemi, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Luis Guzmán, among others.

The first season became a cultural phenomenon when it premiered in 2022, generating significant awards recognition including four Emmy nominations. The show’s success helped establish it as a flagship series for Netflix’s original programming.

In the upcoming second season, Wednesday returns to Nevermore Academy and faces a new antagonist while working to prevent her roommate Enid’s death, according to the official synopsis.

The series is created by showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, based on characters originally created by Charles Addams. Tim Burton serves as executive producer alongside Steve Stark, Andrew Mittman, Gail Berman, and others.

“It’s been a dark delight to watch Wednesday cast her spell over audiences across the globe — one deadpan quip at a time,” Gough and Millar said in a statement. “We’re beyond thrilled she’ll be returning to stalk the halls of Nevermore in Season 3.”

The creators promised that the third season will “unearth more of the school’s sinister secrets” and delve deeper into the Addams family history.
