Microsoft’s Windows 11 upgrade is gaining speed after a slow start earlier this year. New data shows that Windows 11 is now nearly as popular as Windows 10 worldwide, with millions of users making the switch in just over two weeks.

According to Statcounter, Windows 10’s global market share dropped below 50% for the first time, now at 48.9%. Meanwhile, Windows 11 has reached 47.7%, closing the gap significantly. This is a big change from May, when Windows 11’s share fell and Windows 10’s share rose.

In the United States, Windows 11 leads with 55.2% market share, compared to 42% for Windows 10. Europe also saw small gains for Windows 11, while Asia experienced a notable shift. In Asia, Windows 10 dropped from 59% to 49%, with Windows 11 rising to over 46%.

Despite this progress, about 700 million users remain on Windows 10, many of whom have PCs that do not meet Windows 11’s upgrade requirements. Microsoft is encouraging these users to buy new hardware or use a new migration tool that makes upgrading easier.

For users with compatible devices, upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11 remains free. Microsoft is also reminding users that support for Windows 10 ends soon. Users who delay the upgrade risk security issues, especially as Windows vulnerabilities are frequently targeted.

The full June data, expected soon, will show if this upgrade momentum continues.
