Microsoft has launched its first free generative AI certificate in collaboration with LinkedIn, offering professionals an opportunity to upskill in one of the most in-demand fields today.

What Is the Career Essentials in Generative AI Program?

The Career Essentials in Generative AI program, introduced as part of the Microsoft AI Skills Initiative, includes five modules designed for beginners.

Each module features video tutorials, quizzes, and workbooks, culminating in a Professional Certificate in Generative AI.

This certification focuses on Microsoft’s Copilot technology and related tools, with some material tailored to Microsoft Azure and Azure OpenAI. Available in multiple languages, the program is free through 2025.

Generative AI Skills Are in High Demand

Generative AI is now among the top three training priorities for companies globally, according to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs 2023 report.

With over 75% of businesses planning to adopt AI within five years, skills like prompt engineering and ethical AI practices are becoming essential.

Microsoft’s 2024 Work Trend Index revealed that while 75% of knowledge workers use AI at work, many still worry about job security.

Training programs like this aim to address those concerns by empowering employees to use AI effectively.

Why Generative AI Training Matters

Generative AI tools, such as Microsoft Copilot, require users to provide precise prompts for optimal results. This unique skill, combined with ethical oversight, ensures responsible and productive AI use.

As Shravan Goli, COO of Coursera, stated:

“Without good prompts, the tool won’t help employees boost productivity meaningfully. Ethical guidelines are also crucial for responsible use.”

How to Get Certified

To earn the Professional Certificate, participants must complete all five modules, which cover foundational AI knowledge and practical applications.

The certificate can be displayed on LinkedIn profiles, enhancing career prospects in a rapidly evolving job market.

Whether you’re a beginner or looking to refine your AI skills, this free training program offers a valuable opportunity to stay ahead in the age of AI.
