Microsoft Teases “Ultra-Premium” Next-Gen Xbox After $1,000 Handheld Launch

Microsoft has given its strongest hint yet that its next-generation Xbox console will be a high-end, premium device aimed at serious gamers.

In a recent interview with Mashable, Xbox president Sarah Bond described the company’s next-gen system as “a very premium, very high-end curated experience.” Bond also noted that fans can already “see some of the thinking” behind it in Microsoft’s latest handheld — the ROG Xbox Ally X, which costs $1,000.

Microsoft confirmed earlier this month that it remains committed to developing a new Xbox console in partnership with AMD. The company promised “next-level performance, cutting-edge graphics, breakthrough gameplay, and unmatched compatibility” — all while maintaining full support for existing Xbox libraries.

High-End Hardware and Rising Costs

The price of the ROG Xbox Ally X, made by Asus, has sparked speculation that Microsoft’s next console may come with a hefty price tag. Xbox fans have already faced several price increases in recent months, including higher costs for Game Pass subscriptions and hardware.

As of September, prices for current Xbox models were raised as follows:

  • Xbox Series S (512GB): $399.99 (up $20)
  • Xbox Series S (1TB): $449.99 (up $20)
  • Xbox Series X (Digital): $599.99 (up $50)
  • Xbox Series X: $649.99 (up $50)
  • Xbox Series X 2TB Galaxy Edition: $799.99 (up $70)

Next-Gen Vision and Timeline

Microsoft is reportedly targeting a 2027 release window for both its new Xbox console and a separate Xbox handheld. Industry insiders suggest the upcoming console will function more like a PC-hybrid system, potentially supporting third-party stores such as Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.

Bond emphasized that the company’s long-term vision is to make Xbox gaming available across devices, not tied to a single platform.

“This is all about building you a gaming platform that’s always with you,” Bond said. “You can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want, delivering an Xbox experience not locked to one store or device.”

She added that Microsoft is collaborating closely with the Windows team to strengthen its position as the leading platform for gaming.
