Microsoft has quietly shut down its Movies and TV store on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. From July 18, 2025, users can no longer buy new movies or TV shows through the Microsoft Store on these devices.

However, customers will still be able to access and watch any movies or shows they have already purchased using the Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox. Microsoft confirmed that downloads will remain available in HD max resolution, but there will be no refunds for past purchases.

This move follows a long history of Microsoft’s attempts to run a digital video store, starting with the Zune Marketplace in 2006, which later became Xbox Video in 2012, then the Movies & TV app in 2015. After nearly two decades, the company is stepping away from offering video content directly.

Instead, Microsoft will rely on other streaming services like Amazon, Netflix, and Apple TV to provide movies and TV shows on Windows and Xbox platforms.

Microsoft says it will continue to support existing content for users but has not announced how long this support will last. Many users are concerned about the future availability of their purchased videos.
