Meta is hiring people for a new project called Project Warhol. The company will pay participants $50 per hour to help create very lifelike virtual reality (VR) avatars. These avatars show real human faces and movements in VR.
Participants will visit Meta’s large office in Pittsburgh. They will perform tasks like making facial expressions, speaking, moving their hands, and following eye movements. This helps Meta collect data to improve its Codec Avatars technology.
Codec Avatars are digital versions of people that look very real. They aim to make VR feel like you are truly with another person, even when you are far apart. This is better than regular video calls or simple cartoon avatars.
Meta has worked on this technology for many years. Now, the company is closer to putting Codec Avatars in its next VR headset, which may come out in 2026. They have made progress by reducing the time and equipment needed to create these avatars. For example, avatars can now be made from just four selfies taken on a phone.
Meta might also launch a simple version of Codec Avatars for video calls on apps like WhatsApp or Messenger. The company will likely share more information at Meta Connect 2025 in September.
For now, Project Warhol gives people a chance to earn money while helping build the future of virtual reality.
