HBO has officially announced the lead cast for its upcoming “Harry Potter” TV series. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is cast as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take the role of Ron Weasley. The casting process was huge, with over 30,000 actors auditioning since last fall. Filming is set to start this summer.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod praised the new leads, saying, “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.” They also thanked all the young actors who auditioned.
This new series has the potential to launch the careers of McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout, much like the original films did for Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. McLaughlin recently acted in the upcoming comedy “Grow,” Stanton starred in “Matilda: The Musical” on the West End, and this will be Stout’s first major role.
The main cast also includes well-known actors such as John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
The series is written and executive produced by Gardiner, who also serves as showrunner. Mark Mylod will direct several episodes. The project is produced in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Author J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman also serve as executive producers.
Regarding recent controversies surrounding Rowling’s views on the transgender community, HBO’s chief content officer Casey Bloys clarified that the show will not reflect her personal political opinions, emphasizing that the series remains independent of Rowling’s personal views.
