Cooper Flagg Interview

The Dallas Mavericks think they found their answer to months of angry fans. Cooper Flagg, the 18-year-old basketball star from Duke, is now the team’s hope for a fresh start.

The Mavericks picked Flagg first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. They introduced him at a packed press conference on Friday. Flagg was the college player of the year and helped Duke win big games all season.

Fans Still Mad About Luka Trade

Mavericks fans have been furious since the team traded Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Many fans chanted “Fire Nico” outside the team’s arena. Some even held a mock funeral for General Manager Nico Harrison.

Harrison knows fans are still upset. But he thinks Flagg can change their minds.

“I think it will help,” Harrison said when asked about fixing things with fans. “We’re in winning mode now. We have a really good team and Cooper adds to that. I think fans will finally see the vision.”

Early Signs Look Good

The team already sees positive changes since drafting Flagg. Nearly 2,000 fans bought Flagg jerseys in just three days. The team sold $8 million worth of tickets in the same time period.

Companies that stopped working with the Mavericks after the Doncic trade are coming back. The team renewed 75% to 80% of its season tickets. This is impressive for a team that missed the playoffs and dealt with bad headlines for months.

What Flagg Brings to Dallas

Flagg will play alongside veteran stars Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving (when he recovers from injury). The team sees Flagg as someone who can help right away but also lead the franchise for years to come.

“When I first watched him play, I thought ‘wow, it would be great to have the No. 1 pick,'” Harrison said. The Mavericks only had a 1.8% chance to win the draft lottery.

Some critics say Harrison got lucky with the lottery pick. Harrison responded by saying “Fortune favors the bold.”

Can Flagg Deliver?

ESPN reporter Shams Charania praised Harrison’s team building. He said the Mavericks now have one of the NBA’s best frontcourts and a potential superstar in Flagg.

But Harrison still faces pressure. Flagg must play well, and the team must compete in the tough Western Conference. Only then will fans know if Harrison’s big gamble worked.

For now, Dallas has new hope and a young star to build around. The city waits to see if Cooper Flagg can bring back the winning culture that fans remember.
