Marvel Studios is preparing to take its Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) into a new phase with three distinct branches of storytelling. This move will follow the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga, which ends with the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027.
According to reports, Marvel’s third major saga will focus on:
Cosmic Stories
The cosmic side of the MCU will be a major focus after Secret Wars. This includes characters like the Fantastic Four, who will debut in their own film Fantastic Four: First Steps in July 2025. Alongside them, familiar faces from Guardians of the Galaxy and new heroes like Nova are expected to play key roles in expanding off-Earth adventures.
Mutants
Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, mutants such as the X-Men are set to become a major part of the MCU’s future. The studio is reportedly developing its first MCU X-Men movie and planning more projects involving characters like Deadpool. These films aim to integrate mutants fully into the MCU storyline.
Supernatural
Supernatural themes, introduced in earlier phases with characters like Doctor Strange, will continue to grow. Upcoming films like Doctor Strange 3 will explore mystical dimensions, and there are rumors about a Midnight Sons movie, which could include supernatural heroes such as Ghost Rider and Elsa Bloodstone.
Other areas of the MCU, like the multiverse, street-level heroes, and the Avengers team, will still exist but may take a less prominent role. The multiverse storyline, a major focus of recent films, is expected to recede after Secret Wars due to audience fatigue.
Spider-Man remains an important character, with future stories expected to continue featuring him, while the Young Avengers team is anticipated to form soon, bringing younger heroes together.
This three-branch approach marks a new direction for Marvel, focusing on distinct narrative threads to broaden the MCU’s storytelling scope beyond the earlier sagas.
