Marvel Studios has confirmed a major shift in its Disney Plus strategy, and fans are realizing it means one beloved series—Loki—won’t return for a third season.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, revealed at Disney’s Upfronts that the studio is moving away from mini-series formats with Avengers-level stars.
Instead, Marvel will now focus on multi-season shows with smaller-scale characters. This decision officially rules out any future seasons of hit shows like Loki, which starred Tom Hiddleston.
This confirms what many fans feared: Loki season 3 will not happen.
The show was the only live-action MCU series to receive a second season. Premiering in 2021 and returning in 2023, it became one of Marvel’s most critically acclaimed streaming projects. Its second season, in particular, was praised as one of the best MCU entries on any platform, with a powerful finale that saw Loki transform into the God of Stories, safeguarding the timelines from the End of Time.
Although there were rumors of a possible third season, Marvel’s new direction puts those to rest. The studio admitted that using top-tier MCU stars made it too difficult and expensive to keep shows going beyond one season. Instead, big-name characters like Loki may appear in movies or as guest roles—but not as leads of future Disney Plus series.
Tom Hiddleston will still return as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday next year, and possibly in Secret Wars in 2027. But his standalone Disney Plus story has now officially reached its end.
As Marvel moves forward with new shows like Ironheart and Wonder Man, the age of character-focused, high-budget spin-offs led by major Avengers appears to be over.
