Manhattan Shooting at 345 Park Avenue Leaves Five Dead

A mass shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening left five people dead, including an off-duty NYPD officer, and injured four others. The suspected gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, died by suicide on the 33rd floor of the building.

The attack began around 6:30 p.m. when Tamura, wearing body armor, exited a black BMW parked outside the skyscraper and entered the building’s lobby with an AR-15-style rifle. He immediately opened fire, killing Officer Didarul Islam, 36, who was working off-duty as a security guard. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, was the first victim.

Tamura then shot a second security guard, a man in the lobby, and a woman hiding behind a pillar. He continued to the 33rd floor, where he killed another person before turning the gun on himself.

Four others were injured. One is in critical but stable condition at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Two others were treated at Bellevue Hospital.

The 44-story office tower houses major companies, including the NFL, Blackstone, and KPMG. The building was placed on lockdown, and nearby streets were closed, causing heavy rush-hour disruptions. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as office workers evacuated with their hands raised under police guidance.

Police found a loaded revolver, ammunition, and prescription medication in Tamura’s car, which he had driven from Las Vegas to New York. Authorities confirmed he held a valid Nevada concealed carry permit issued in 2022 and had a history of mental health issues.

Investigators are looking into why Tamura targeted the 33rd floor, which includes offices of Rudin Management. There is no confirmed link to the NFL headquarters in the same building.

“This appears to be the act of a lone shooter,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said. She added there is no ongoing threat to the public. Mayor Eric Adams called the attack “violent and despicable,” and met with Officer Islam’s family, praising his bravery.

The FBI is assisting the NYPD in examining Tamura’s background, travel history, and digital records. The motive remains unknown.
