Apple is gearing up to unveil macOS 26, and according to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the update will be officially called macOS Tahoe — named after the scenic Lake Tahoe in California. This version is set to be Apple’s biggest user interface overhaul since the release of macOS Big Sur in 2020.
The new name reflects Apple’s continued tradition of naming macOS versions after iconic California locations. Tahoe, a well-known vacation spot and second home to many Apple employees, fits the bill for a significant update.
macOS 26 Tahoe will prioritize a complete UI redesign rather than focusing on major feature additions. While some new tools are expected — like an updated Shortcuts app designed to work with Apple’s foundational AI models — Apple Intelligence will not receive major upgrades in this release, Gurman noted.
Additionally, Apple is adopting a new unified naming convention across all platforms. macOS 26, iOS 26, and other system updates will align by version number to reduce confusion among users and developers. This strategy is similar to how automakers label their models by the upcoming year.
Apple is expected to officially announce macOS 26 Tahoe at WWDC 2025, starting June 10.
