Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Nears $1 Billion; Sequel Officially in Development

Disney has officially announced a live-action sequel to its successful Lilo & Stitch remake, following the original film’s remarkable box office performance. The first live-action adaptation is nearing $1 billion in international ticket sales and recently surpassed Warner Brothers’ A Minecraft Movie to become the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far.

The sequel announcement coincided with “626” Day—celebrating Stitch’s experiment number—and sparked renewed interest in the Lilo & Stitch franchise.

Notably, the animated sequel Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch has surged to become the fourth most-watched movie globally on Disney+, according to FlixPatrol. The original 2002 animated film also climbed the streaming ranks, now sitting eighth in worldwide viewership on the platform.

Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, released directly to home video in 2005, follows Stitch as he struggles with a malfunction that threatens his life. The story explores Lilo’s efforts to help Stitch while balancing her own challenges. The sequel featured a new voice actress for Lilo, Dakota Fanning, with several original cast members returning.

Disney has yet to reveal details on the sequel’s plot, creative team, or release date. It is expected that director Dean Fleischer Camp, who helmed the first live-action film, will return, along with Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch.

Given the animated sequel’s newfound streaming popularity, there is speculation that elements of its story might be adapted for the live-action follow-up. However, the original Stitch Has a Glitch is smaller in scale, and Disney may choose to expand the narrative beyond Hawai’i to create another blockbuster.

Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
