Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk says Leonardo DiCaprio would be his first choice to lead a U.S. remake of the hit Netflix series.
Hwang made the comment in a lighthearted video on Vanity Fair’s YouTube channel, where he joined original cast members for a quiz game.
During the segment, Hwang asked who he would cast in an American version of Squid Game. After some fun guesses, actor Yim Si-wan correctly answered: Leonardo DiCaprio.
“We had a lot of rumors about him — will he be a cameo and such,” Hwang said, referring to ongoing fan speculation.
When asked if DiCaprio would play a villain or a contestant, Hwang replied:
“If he were to do it, I think he would do well as a player. Lately he’s gotten good at loser roles like Gi-hun’s.”
Hwang also addressed reports of a rumored U.S. spinoff titled Squid Game: America, allegedly set to film this December with director David Fincher attached. He denied the news but added:
“If I were officially asked, I’d seriously consider it.”
Squid Game first premiered in 2021 and became a global sensation. It won multiple Emmy Awards and remains one of Netflix’s most successful shows. Leonardo DiCaprio, a fan of international cinema, previously praised the show during a Netflix event.
So far, no official plans for a U.S. remake have been confirmed.
