Laufey released a new single titled “Tough Luck” on May 15, 2025. The song is the lead track from her upcoming third album, A Matter of Time, which is set to be released on August 22, 2025.
“Tough Luck” is about love that didn’t work out. Laufey describes it as a “fiery song about love gone wrong.” The lyrics express heartbreak, disappointment, and emotional conflict.
The song includes acoustic and electric instruments like guitar, piano, drums, bass, synthesizer, and violin. Laufey’s calm and emotional voice blends with the jazz-inspired sound. The track was produced by Spencer Stewart, who has worked with her on earlier albums.
The new album, A Matter of Time, will explore themes of love, friendship, fear, and growing up as a young woman. Laufey says it is “an album about female emotion.”
The project will also include collaborations with Spencer Stewart and Aaron Dessner, a well-known producer who has worked with Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran.
Laufey’s last album, Bewitched, won a Grammy in 2023. Her debut album, Everything I Know About Love, came out in 2022.
Tough Luck Laufey Lyrics
Are you tired? I can tell that you’re tired
Your eyes turn gray, you beg me to be silent
You said I can’t read your mind
But I’m reading it just fine
You think you’re so misunderstood
The black cat of your neighborhood
Tough luck, my boy, your time is up
I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough
Of waiting ’til you lie and cheat
Just like you did to the actress before me
Oops, she doesn’t even know
You won’t be missed, I’m glad to see you go
Tough luck, tough luck
Since we’re spilling secrets
Does your mother even know? (Mother even know)
You demoralized, effaced me
Just to feed your frail ego (Oh)
When you’re screaming at the TV
Cussing out opposing football teams
You said I’d never understand
The things that make a man a man
Tough luck, my boy, your time is up
I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough
Of waiting ’til you lie and cheat
Just like you did to the actress before me
Oops, she doesn’t even know
You won’t be missed, I’m glad to see you
I should congratulate thee
For so nearly convincing me
I’m not quite as smart as I seem
That I’m a loud-mouthed nobody
My accent and music are dumb
Your tattoos are no better, hun
The proof says you’re tragic as fuck
The truth is that’s just tough, tough luck (Tough luck)
Tough, tough luck (Tough luck)
Tough, tough luck (Tough, tough luck)
(Tough, tough luck)
Tough luck, my boy, your time is up
I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough
Of waiting ’til you lie and cheat
Just like you did to the actress before me
Oops, she doesn’t even know
You won’t be missed, I’m glad to see you go
