The team behind the popular Halide camera app has released Kino, a new video app for iPhone that balances professional features with ease of use.
Key Features:
- Clean, simple interface similar to iPhone’s default camera app
- Easy access to advanced controls like white balance and focus
- Flexible video settings (resolution, frame rate, codec)
- “Instant Grade” feature that shows color effects while filming
- Built-in color presets from professional filmmakers
- Option to import custom color effects (LUTs)
- Choice of storage location (Photos app or Files app)
Current Limitations:
- No 4K 120fps Dolby Vision recording
- Brief delay when switching lenses
- No digital zoom between fixed lens positions
- Some stabilization issues at 60fps
The app costs $20 and is available in the App Store. While pricier than many apps, it offers features that make professional-style video recording much simpler than using the iPhone’s built-in camera app.
The developers plan more features in an upcoming “Casablanca” update.
