Kesha has spoken out for the first time about the backlash over the controversial Jeffrey Dahmer lyric in her 2010 song “Cannibal”. The line became a topic of debate after the release of the Netflix series Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022.
The lyric, which includes the phrase “Yeah, I’ll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer”, sparked criticism on social media, with many people asking Kesha to remove the reference out of respect for the victims and their families.
In a recent interview with People, Kesha said:
“Oh my God, I got re-canceled for the Jeffrey Dahmer lyric… It was a controversial lyric. If some people aren’t offended by what I’m doing, I’m probably not doing a very good job of being a pop star.”
Kesha continues to perform the song without changing the lyrics, including on her current “Tits Out Tour”.
Back in 2022, Kesha’s mother Pebe Sebert, who co-wrote the song, took responsibility for the line.
She said in a TikTok video:
“That was my line… Kesha and the other writer were too young to even know who Jeffrey Dahmer was.”
Pebe added:
“It was meant to be tongue-in-cheek. It was not actually about cannibalism.”
“I’m sorry for anyone who’s lost a family member in this tragedy. We never meant to hurt anyone.”
