Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, a performer in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, has been arrested by Louisiana State Police months after holding up the flags of Sudan and Palestine during the performance.
Nantambu, 41, was charged with “disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly” and turned himself in through his attorney, police confirmed Thursday.
During Lamar’s performance of “TV Off”, Nantambu climbed onto a prop car and briefly held up the two flags in what appeared to be an unsanctioned protest. Although not clearly shown on TV, fan footage captured the moment before security personnel chased him off and restrained him.
The NFL responded swiftly at the time. Brian McCarthy, the league’s VP of Communications, said the act was not part of the show and that Nantambu would be banned for life from all NFL stadiums and events. Show producers Roc Nation also confirmed the stunt was not rehearsed or authorized.
The New Orleans Police Department originally declined to press charges immediately after the show, but a warrant was later obtained through Orleans Parish Criminal District Court.
