A U.S. federal judge has approved the sealing of a redacted version of Kendrick Lamar’s recording contract in the ongoing lawsuit between Drake and Universal Music Group (UMG).

Drake’s legal team sought access to internal UMG documents, including Lamar’s contract, as part of his claims that UMG improperly released and promoted a song, Not Like Us, which Drake says contains defamatory statements about him.

Judge Jeanette Vargas of the Southern District of New York granted UMG permission to file a redacted version of the contract, citing the need to protect “confidential business information” and “the privacy interests of non-parties.” The court noted that Lamar’s contract reflects an ongoing business relationship, making confidentiality essential.

The ruling follows months of disputes over discovery, with Drake’s lawyers arguing that UMG’s redactions rendered the contract “unreadable and incomprehensible.”

Drake is pursuing extensive documentation from UMG, including internal communications regarding his own contracts and the label’s business practices.

UMG has defended its actions, calling Drake’s complaint “legal blather” and asserting that his claims ignore his history of provocative music exchanges. The case highlights the tension between artist disputes and record label control over contracts and releases.
