A new moon on Sunday, January 18, 2026, marks more than just the start of a new lunar cycle. It sets the stage for a rare “ring of fire” solar eclipse, the Lunar New Year, and the start of Ramadan.

The annular solar eclipse will occur on February 17, 2026, over Antarctica. During the eclipse, the moon will cover about 96% of the sun, creating a glowing “ring of fire” visible for up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds. A partial eclipse will also be seen in parts of southern Africa and South America.

The same new moon signals the start of the Lunar New Year, which will mark the Year of the Fire Horse. This combination of zodiac animal and element is rare, last occurring in 1966. Lunar New Year celebrations will end with the Lantern Festival on March 3, which coincides with a total lunar eclipse, 2026’s only “blood moon.”

Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, will begin with the sighting of the crescent moon after the new moon, expected to start on February 18 and end around March 19, 2026.

In the days following January 18, the moon will gradually appear in the evening sky. On January 19, a thin crescent will be visible in the western twilight. By January 21, the moon will appear near Saturn, and later it will pass close to the Pleiades star cluster on January 27 and near Jupiter on January 30.

This new moon sets an eventful month for skywatchers and marks important lunar-based celebrations around the world.
