James Gunn’s reboot of Superman has been named Letterboxd’s Most Rewatched Film of 2025, according to the platform’s annual Year in Review report. The data is based on nearly 700 million ratings and viewing logs from users worldwide.

Released on July 11, 2025, the film recorded more repeat viewings than any other title released last year. Letterboxd defines rewatch activity as films logged five or more times by the highest number of users. The superhero film finished ahead of animated hit KPop Demon Hunters and musical blockbuster Wicked.

Starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, the film received an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 on Letterboxd. Early reactions briefly pushed the score above 4.0 before it settled. Many viewers praised the film’s hopeful tone and emotional warmth.

At the box office, Superman grossed $616.8 million worldwide against a reported $225 million production budget. It was the highest-grossing superhero film of 2025, although some analysts noted it may have narrowly missed full theatrical profitability after marketing and cinema revenue splits.

The cast also drew strong reactions. Rachel Brosnahan was praised for her sharp and confident portrayal of Lois Lane, while Nicholas Hoult earned attention for his intense performance as Lex Luthor. Critics highlighted the contrast between the film’s optimism and darker recent superhero releases.

Letterboxd’s report also named James Gunn as the most-watched director of 2025, reflecting strong engagement with his work across the platform. Many users reported logging the film more than 20 times, calling it comforting and emotionally uplifting.

Not all reactions were positive, with some viewers criticising the film’s visual style and crowded storytelling. However, its dominance in repeat viewings suggests strong long-term audience appeal.

As DC Studios moves forward under Gunn’s leadership, with a sequel already in development, Superman’s success signals renewed interest in optimistic, character-driven superhero films.
