Warner Bros. has officially begun a new chapter for DC Comics films by launching the DC Universe (DCU), a fresh shared franchise overseen by James Gunn and Peter Safran.
This reboot replaces the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and aims to connect movies, television, animation, and video games into one unified story world.
Alongside the shared DCU, standalone films will continue under the “Elseworlds” label. Notably, Robert Pattinson’s The Batman series will remain separate from the new DCU continuity.
Key Upcoming Films in the New DC Universe
The first major DCU film is Superman, releasing on July 11, 2025. Written and directed by James Gunn, this movie promises a hopeful yet relevant take on the iconic hero. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
The cast also includes Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner/Green Lantern), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), and Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho). The story draws inspiration from classic comics like All-Star Superman and Kingdom Come.
Next is Supergirl, scheduled for June 26, 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, the film stars Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. It follows her cosmic journey to help a young girl seek revenge against a space pirate. Jason Momoa will appear as Lobo, with Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain, alongside Krypto the Superdog.
On September 11, 2026, Clayface will debut. This horror-inspired film, directed by James Watkins and co-written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, stars Tom Rhys Harries as the tragic villain Clayface, marking the character’s first live-action appearance.
Elseworlds and Other Projects
The Batman Part II, an Elseworlds project separate from the DCU, will arrive on October 1, 2027. Directed by Matt Reeves, it continues Robert Pattinson’s Batman story, featuring returning actors Andy Serkis (Alfred), Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon), and Colin Farrell (Penguin). The plot continues after HBO’s The Penguin series, exploring Gotham’s rising crime.
Other upcoming projects include The Authority, featuring a morally complex team of superhumans, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold, focusing on Bruce Wayne and his son Damian Wayne (the fifth Robin). Directed by Andy Muschietti, this film is inspired by Grant Morrison’s Batman comics.
Swamp Thing, directed by James Mangold, explores the dark magical side of the DC Universe, while Teen Titans, written by Ana Nogueira, will highlight a young superhero team led by Robin.
Sergeant Rock, directed by Luca Guadagnino and starring Colin Farrell, tells a World War II story about a soldier and his team fighting Nazis to retrieve the Spear of Destiny.
Additional Films and Plans
Other confirmed projects include Constantine 2 with Keanu Reeves, an animated Dynamic Duo featuring Jason Todd and Dick Grayson slated for 2028, as well as new Wonder Woman and Bane & Deathstroke films in early development.
