Director James Gunn has revealed that his version of Superman is beatable, and that’s exactly how he wants it. In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn explained why he made the hero more vulnerable than past versions.
“I didn’t want a Superman who could punch planets,” Gunn said. “So he’s a little less powerful.”
The director believes that making Superman invincible would ruin the drama and tension of the story. He said that unbeatable heroes don’t make for good storytelling. “I’ll just go out and write God Man, who can destroy you with a wink,” Gunn joked.
Gunn also explained that many fans prefer heroes like Batman because they can lose. By making Superman beatable, Gunn hopes to give fans a more emotional, relatable story where Superman’s victories feel earned.
He also dismissed online debates about whether Superman could beat characters like Homelander or others. “It’s the stupidest,” Gunn said, showing that he cares more about good stories than power rankings.
With this new approach, Gunn is offering a fresh take on the famous superhero, focusing on human struggles, real risks, and emotional growth.
Superman won’t be perfect — and that’s exactly the point.
