James Gunn, now leading the DC Universe, revealed that Marvel and DC have discussed a big-screen crossover in the past. While he’s open to the idea, Gunn emphasized that such a crossover must come from a genuine creative place to work well, rather than just being a flashy event.
He said, “People want good stories with their superheroes, and just having Spider-Man and Superman team up isn’t enough if the story isn’t strong.”
Gunn pointed out that the MCU currently needs a major win more than the DCU. After some recent misses in Marvel’s Phases 4 and 5, Marvel is leaning on veteran talents like the Russo Brothers and Robert Downey Jr. for its next big event, Avengers: Doomsday.
While the MCU’s future projects carry high stakes, the DC Universe is in a promising place, especially with Superman’s upcoming strong box office debut and Gunn’s track record of success.
The DCU has plenty of time to build up its characters, including Batman and Wonder Woman, before uniting them for major event films.
Gunn believes the DC Universe’s vast roster allows for multiple story arcs and event movies without needing to rush into a crossover with Marvel. For now, Gunn suggests that the DCU focus on growing independently, while the MCU could consider such a crossover as a “Hail Mary” if it faces setbacks.
