James Gunn and DC Studios Cancel a Movie Because the Script Was Not Ready

James Gunn, co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, recently announced that the studio canceled a movie even though it was already approved to be made. The reason was simple: the screenplay was not good enough to begin filming.

Gunn said the studio follows a strict rule to only start making movies and TV shows when the scripts are ready and strong. He explained, “I’m not going to shoot anything until I’m happy with it.” This means that even if a project is popular or already greenlit, it will be stopped if the writing is not up to standard.

The canceled movie was not named, but many believe it was the Sgt. Rock film, which was set to begin shooting in summer 2025. The World War II story was delayed, and insiders say the studio hopes to start it in 2026 instead.

Currently, DC Studios is focusing on other projects with strong scripts, such as the new Superman movie written by Gunn himself. Other films and shows in development with scripts that Gunn praised include Supergirl, Clayface, The Batman sequel, Peacemaker season 2, and Lanterns on HBO.

Gunn also confirmed that he and his team will not approve any new movies until the scripts meet their high standards. This “script-first” approach aims to improve the overall quality of the DC Universe.

Some other planned projects, including Booster Gold, Paradise Lost, Waller, The Authority, and Swamp Thing, are still being worked on but have not reached the desired script quality yet.

In summary, DC Studios under James Gunn is committed to making better movies by prioritizing good scripts. This means some projects may be delayed or canceled, but the focus remains on quality storytelling for fans.
