British singer-songwriter and producer James Blake has teamed up with American rapper Lil Yachty to create the collaborative album “Bad Cameo”, which was released on June 28, 2024.
The 10-track record features a unique fusion of Blake’s ambient electronic style and Yachty’s distinctive vocals.
Contrary to expectations, “Bad Cameo” is not a traditional hip-hop album. Instead, it explores a more experimental, beatless sonic space that showcases the artists’ versatility. As Blake explained, many of the songs started with him playing Yachty ambient, beatless pieces, which the rapper then quickly wrote melodies and lyrics for.
“I think what people might not know about this record is that most of the songs started by me playing him a piece of beatless ambience and then him literally just writing a song in about under 20 seconds. It was crazy,” Blake said in an interview.
Yachty also shared that working with Blake pushed him to approach his songwriting with more intention and quality, living up to the high standards of Blake’s discography.
While the official tracklist has not been revealed, fans are eagerly anticipating the unique blend of electronic and hip-hop elements that the two artists will bring to the table. The album cover, which features a humorous contrast between Blake’s tea and Yachty’s soda, further highlights the different styles and personalities of the collaborators.
“Bad Cameo” marks the first full collaborative effort between Blake and Yachty, though both artists have previously worked with a variety of rappers and producers. Fans are excited to see how these two distinctive voices will come together to create something new and innovative.
