IVE’s Jang Won-young Faces Backlash Over Bold Game-Day Outfit

A performance by K-pop group IVE at the opening of the 2025 Coupang Play Series has sparked a heated debate over stage costumes after member Jang Won-young’s outfit drew criticism for being “too revealing” for a sports setting.

The group performed during a ceremonial kickoff and halftime show at Suwon World Cup Stadium on Wednesday. Wearing customized versions of sports uniforms, the IVE members energized the crowd with vibrant visuals and choreography. However, Jang Won-young’s form-fitting, shoulder-baring top and short shorts quickly became a focal point online.

Some viewers argued the outfit was inappropriate for the occasion, citing concerns over modesty and the suitability of such attire at a public sports event. Others came to the group’s defense, stating that modern performance wear often pushes boundaries and that the styling reflected IVE’s artistic identity.

The controversy gained further momentum after member Rei addressed the issue on a fan platform, saying, “Don’t you think our IVE uniforms are cute?” and explaining that each member requested their own outfit customization.

Despite the clarification, criticism—especially from IVE’s Chinese fanbase—continued. One prominent fan group claimed the outfit limited Jang’s movement and called it overly provocative.

The incident has reignited ongoing discussions about fashion norms in K-pop and the fine line between performance and propriety. Experts say the debate reflects shifting expectations around female idol image, cultural values, and global audience diversity.

As K-pop continues to grow internationally, artists and agencies may face increasing pressure to balance creative expression with cultural sensitivities.
