iPhone 17: Will the New Air Model Win Over Pro Users?

Apple iPhone 17 Air

When it comes to choosing an iPhone, most years, the decision is pretty straightforward for me. I usually opt for a Pro model, typically the smaller of the two.

However, next year’s iPhone 17 lineup, with the new ultra-thin 17 Air, is throwing a wrench in my usual purchase routine. The decision is going to be harder than ever. Here’s what I’m thinking:

The Shift From Plus to Air

Apple’s iPhone lineup is evolving again. After discontinuing the iPhone mini due to poor sales, Apple replaced it with the iPhone Plus. But now, the Plus model is getting the boot too, and the iPhone 17 Air is taking its place. This model will feature:

  • An ultra-thin form factor
  • A display size between the Pro and Pro Max
  • Only one rear-facing camera
  • A premium price

While the 17 Air won’t be the “best” iPhone, it promises a glimpse of the future. It’s a bold step in design, but some compromises may make it less appealing for those who want the full iPhone experience.

Compromises That Matter

There are three main factors I’m considering that will make the decision a tough one:

  1. The Camera: Will I Miss the 5x Telephoto Lens?
One of the highlights of my iPhone 16 Pro has been the 5x telephoto camera, especially since I find the Pro Max too large. It’s been amazing for zoomed-in shots, and unless the 17 Air can match that with digital zoom improvements, I’ll miss that feature. Losing the telephoto lens would be a significant compromise for me.
  2. Battery Life: How Much Will the Thin Design Affect It?
While we don’t have specific details yet, it’s safe to assume that the thinner body of the 17 Air will mean poorer battery life compared to the thicker Pro models. A slight reduction in battery life would be manageable, but the real-world impact will determine if it’s worth the trade-off.
  3. Display Size: Too Big to Handle?
The iPhone 17 Air’s display will be slightly larger than the iPhone 16 Pro’s at 6.6 inches. Since I prefer one-handed use and liked the smaller display of the 15 Pro, the larger size of the Air might be a concern. However, the thinner body could make the larger screen more manageable, so I’ll reserve judgment until I see it in person.

Will I Choose the 17 Air?

Despite these compromises, I’m leaning toward the iPhone 17 Air. Its design, combined with a fresh look and feel, excites me. But, if the iPhone 17 Pro models get major exclusive updates, like new Pro features, I might rethink my decision.

Ultimately, the choice will come down to whether the iPhone 17 Air offers enough new features to outweigh the sacrifices. I’m waiting to see the full lineup reveal before making my final decision.
